About the Project

Unseen Oceans: Meet a Field Museum Scientist

When Field Museum scientist Dr. Janet Voight discovered the Dorado Outcrop—an underwater site teeming with a newly observed species of octopus—the museum sought to share this groundbreaking research with visitors in a way that was both visually captivating and scientifically accurate. The challenge was to translate a complex deep-sea discovery into a short, accessible video that could connect audiences to the excitement of exploration and discovery.

I collaborated closely with Dr. Voight and the museum’s exhibit developer to develop a clear and engaging narrative. The video combined deep-sea expedition footage, interview segments, and contextual graphics to illustrate the environment and significance of the discovery. Careful editing and pacing helped convey the delicate balance between scientific detail and emotional impact, immersing viewers in the wonder of life found in one of Earth’s most remote ecosystems.

The completed video was featured in the Field Museum’s Unseen Oceans exhibition, where it introduced visitors to the hidden biodiversity of the deep sea through the story of the Dorado Octopus Outcrop. The piece deepened public understanding of ocean research and showcased the Field Museum’s role in uncovering life beyond the visible world.
